EPT Monte Carlo – British Luck Runs Out

Lewis Michaels
Friday 30th April 2010

ept finalDay 4 of the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final ended with the exit of the last British player Craig McCorkell.

Going into Day 4, McCorkell had just under 1.5 million in chips. But following a general trend of the day where three of the top four chip leaders exited, McCorkell busted out on the final table bubble, exiting in 9th place for €100,000.

McCorkell’s departure came within minutes of fellow Briton Matt Perrins, who after starting the day on just over 2.5 million, felt a run of bad luck, exiting in 10th, also for €100,000.

As Perrins made his exit, the remaining nine convened to the unofficial final table (the official final table being eight handed) where McCorkell sat mid field on 1.7 million.

ept-pokerstars-300x300Play has closed on Day 2 of the PokerStars.com EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo started with just 119 players in the running to take the coveted €1.7 million first prize.

The morning kicked off with 413 hopefuls and at the end of the day Britain’s hopes for glory rest on Irish Open champion James Mitchell and former EPT champion Victoria Coren who both have healthy stacks.

Still in the running, albeit with slightly less healthier stacks are Neil Channing, Toby Lewis and football legend Teddy Sheringham. All are in the money after the bubble burst just before the end of play.

Somehow Tweeting throughout the day, Coren vented her agony as the bubble drew nearer, ‘Down to 133. 5 more still to go. It’s slower’n molasses in January.’ And her patience almost slipped getting involved in a massive hand that could’ve seen ‘er end.

Her victory makes her the third woman to win an EPT event and is the second British player to take down an EPT in 2010 following Jake Cody’s victory at the EPT Deauville.

In the biggest EPT event staged in Europe, Boeree outlasted her 1239 opponents in the last EPT event before the Grand Final in Monte Carlo which kicks off on Sunday.

She defeated Jakob Carlsson in the heads up battle with a classic all-in race. Raising and then calling Carlsson’s pre-flop all-in, her fate was in the hands of the poker gods as her pocket fives raced the Swede’s A-6.
